What size lamp works on a small bedside table?
Choose a bedside lamp by its full width and the space you actually have left on the table. Measure after placing your book, phone and water glass. A narrow base alone does not guarantee a good fit: the shade may extend beyond it.
Start with the usable surface
Measure the table’s width and depth, then mark the area you want to keep clear. Make a paper outline of the lamp’s full footprint and place it on the table. Open any nearby drawer and check that you can reach the controls from bed without knocking other objects over.
This is a practical planning method, not a fixed rule about the “correct” lamp-to-table ratio. Your table layout and how you use the light matter more than a universal percentage.

Does a taller lamp make a better reading light?
Not necessarily. A decorative lamp’s height does not establish how much light reaches a book. Consider light output, glare, the direction of the beam and where you sit. If a product does not list the information you need, ask us before choosing it as your only reading light.
Plan for charging as well as placement
A cordless lamp can sit away from a wall socket during use, but it still needs somewhere to charge. Leave a stable charging spot with enough room for the cable.
